Background

Dr. Magnuson specializes in gastrointestinal surgery, including surgeries of the stomach, gallbladder, pancreas and bowel. He has a special interest in bariatric surgery and established the Johns Hopkins Center for Bariatric Surgery in 1997. In 2006, the program was recognized as a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Magnuson completed his specialty training in gastrointestinal surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he also completed a fellowship investigating issues related to gallstone pathogenesis and biliary tract disease. He is also a member of the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Hernia Center.  He is currently Chair of the Department of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and Vice Chair of Surgery at Johns Hopkins.
