Stephen R. Broderick, M.D., MPHS, is an assistant professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a thoracic surgeon, part of a multidisciplinary team treating lung cancer patients in the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.

Dr. Broderick's primary clinical focus is at Sibley Memorial Hospital, in Washington, D.C. He also practices at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Broderick has a clinical expertise in surgical treatment of lung cancer, esophageal cancer and other thoracic malignancies, as well as benign thoracic conditions. This includes achalasia, bronchoscopy, chest wall reconstruction and tumors, lung nodules and paraesophageal hernias. He has a clinical interest in minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer and the coordinated delivery of multidisciplinary care for thoracic oncology patients.
Before joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Broderick was a thoracic surgeon at St Luke’s Hospital, where he served as the medical director of the cardiothoracic intensive care unit and a member of the oncology steering committee. He also served as an instructor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Broderick received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2003 and he completed his internship and residency training in general surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He studied the molecular biology of lung cancer as a research fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he received the Chairman's Award for outstanding contributions to the basic science research fellowship. Dr. Broderick also completed a fellowship in thoracic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in 2012 and earned a Masters in Population Health Science from Washington University School of Medicine in 2014.
Dr. Broderick is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Broderick’s research interests are focused on improving outcomes for lung cancer patients. He is particularly interested in studying how various treatments for early-stage lung cancer impact patients’ quality of life. Dr. Broderick has contributed to numerous publications and is a reviewer for the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, as well as Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Broderick really helped me understand the condition I have which is a paraesophogeal hernia and paralysis of the right hemidiaphragm and showed me on the radiology films how it was depicted. He is mostly a lung surgeon and promised to refer me to [staff] who handles paraesophogeal hernia issues frequently. He also commented about the good reputation of [staff], whom I had already consulted.

The appointment was delayed by 1.5 hr without anybody communicating with me. After 1 hr I wait I wanted to leave and the nurse commented that she thought Dr Broderick had already seen me. She then checked and told me that he would see me in a few minutes. It took another half a hour to see him.
