Background

Shira Ziegler, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the McKusick-Nathans Department of Genetic Medicine and has a long-standing commitment to the diagnosis, management, and treatment of children with rare genetic disorders. She graduated from Oberlin College with highest honors in neuroscience and worked in the National Institutes of Health’s Undiagnosed Diseases Program and Human Genome Research Institute. At the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, she completed her medical and graduate studies in the Medical Scientist Training Program and then dual residency training in pediatrics and clinical genetics. She served as the Department of Genetic Medicine chief resident before completing a fellowship in medical biochemical genetics. Her clinical practice focuses on inborn errors of metabolism and undiagnosed and rare disorders of pathological calcification.

Research Summary

Dr. Ziegler’s research leverages rare Mendelian disorders of vascular calcification and the connective tissue to elucidate basic mechanisms and identify pharmacologic and genetic modifiers of disease.
