Dr. Shannon Murphy completed her PhD in Microbiology at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where her research focused on Vibrio cholerae. She then completed an APHL/CDC fellowship in Antimicrobial Resistance at the New York State Department of Health Wadsworth Center in Albany, New York, where she developed sequencing-based assays for the detection of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Dr. Murphy subsequently completed a Clinical Microbiology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Director of the Bacteriology Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Murphy’s research focuses on surveillance for multidrug-resistant organisms of public health significance, with an emphasis on carbapenemase-producing bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Candida auris.
