Serena Mao, MD, PhD

Serena Mao, MD, PhD is a radiation oncologist and serves as an instructor in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences at Suburban Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Mao has expertise in radiation treatment for breast cancer and gynecologic cancers. She obtained her medical and graduate degrees at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed residency training in Radiation Oncology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Mao is passionate about providing compassionate, equitable, patient-centered care of the highest quality. Her commitment to patient care and advocacy was recognized by the Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence and she received the Frank L. Coulson, Jr Award for Clinical Excellence. She served as Chief Resident in her final year of residency.

A native of the National Capitol Region (NCR-MD/DC/VA), Dr. Mao is deeply committed to serving the community she calls home. Her clinical practice is complemented by a strong focus on research and multidisciplinary collaboration. Her work has been recognized by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO), and the American Radium Society (ARS).

Outside of work, Dr. Mao spends her time chasing after her two boys, snuggling with her three cats, and tackling gardening projects with her husband. She has an on-again and off-again relationship with her exercise bike but enjoys staying active.
