Background

Dr. Rohan Mathur is a neurologist and neurocritical care physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He cares for patients with severe neurological and neurosurgical emergencies, including stroke, brain injury, brain swelling, coma, and disorders of consciousness.

He is also a physician-scientist focused on improving how acute brain injuries are monitored, diagnosed, and treated. His research centers on intracranial pressure, coma, and recovery of consciousness. He helps lead a multidisciplinary team developing advanced monitoring technologies and AI-based tools to support bedside decision-making for critically ill patients. Dr. Mathur’s work is grounded in compassionate, patient-centered care. He has helped bring music therapy and narrative-based care into the ICU, ensuring that care reflects not only clinical data, but also each patient’s values, goals, and lived experience. He is a dedicated educator and mentor, serving as faculty for the Neurocritical Care Fellowship and the Osler Attending Preceptor Program. He has received numerous awards for clinical excellence, teaching, research, and humanistic care, reflecting his commitment to advancing the field while training the next generation of physicians and advanced practice providers.

Dr. Mathur earned his medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University. He completed a residency in Neurology and a fellowship in Neurocritical Care from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Research Summary

Dr. Mathur serves as the Associate Director of the Precision Medicine Center for Neurocritical Care, a multidisciplinary research group of more than 20 physicians, scientists, applied mathematicians, and data scientists. This team develops state-of-the-art artificial intelligence–based tools to help clinicians better predict outcomes and care for patients with critical brain and spinal cord injuries in the intensive care unit. Dr. Mathur and his team helped pioneer scalable AI-based tools for intracranial pressure (ICP) waveform processing and prediction, including CICL, the first validated semi-supervised framework to clean and label high-frequency ICP data for predictive modeling. In addition to his work in AI and precision medicine in Neurocritical Care, Dr. Mathur has helped develop innovative clinical and research programs focused on humanizing neurocritical care. These include programs studying the role of music therapy in patients with coma, as well as the use of audio recordings from patients and family members to enhance compassionate care in the Neurocritical Care Unit.
