Background

Dr. Rita Kalyani is a Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  She graduated with an undergraduate degree from Harvard College and completed her medical degree, residency, and fellowship at Johns Hopkins.  She also obtained a Masters in Health Science degree in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

As a NIH-funded clinician scientist, Dr. Kalyani has authored over 175 peer-reviewed publications and built a research program focused on understanding the factors leading to development of diabetes complications, particularly in high-risk populations. She has conducted epidemiological and patient-oriented research that has led to fundamental discoveries regarding the development of skeletal muscle loss, physical disability, and frailty in diabetes. She has also spearheaded studies investigating sex differences in cardiovascular disease and diabetes which have influenced primary prevention guidelines.

Dr. Kalyani launched the Diabetes Management Service for Johns Hopkins’ Total Pancreatectomy Islet Auto Transplant Program in 2011. She is the co-founder of the Johns Hopkins Diabetes POC-IT Guide for healthcare professionals. She is also the founder and past Editor-in-Chief of the Johns Hopkins Patient Website to Diabetes.

Dr. Kalyani has been the Chief Scientific and Medical Officer of the American Diabetes Association since 2025. She previously served as President of Medicine & Science on the ADA's National Board of Directors. She continues to have a clinical practice as an adult endocrinologist.
