Background

Dr. Rakhi P. Naik is the Associate Director for the Division of Hematology at Johns Hopkins University. She also serves as Director of the Fellowship Hematology Track and Director of Organ Systems Foundation of Medicine (OSFM), the largest pre-clerkship course in the medical school. She holds an undergraduate degree in Biomedical & Electrical Engineering from Duke University, an M.D. with Honors in Research from Cornell University, and a Masters in Health Science (MHS) from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  She completed her Internal Medicine Residency and Hematology Fellowship training at Johns Hopkins, where she also served as Assistant Chief of Service (Chief Resident).

Dr. Naik specializes in the treatment of adult patients with wide-array of non-malignant (classical) hematologic diseases, including autoimmune cytopenias, coagulation disorders, hemoglobinopathies, and myeloid disorders.  Her primary research expertise is in sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait.

Dr. Naik served as the inaugural Chair of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Hematology-Focused Training Program Consortium, which aims to create innovative training pathways and curriculum to increase trainee recruitment into academic hematology.

Research Summary

Dr. Naik's research focuses on understanding the epidemiology and mechanisms of venous thromboembolism and chronic kidney disease in sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait.  Her studies were the first to demonstrate the association between sickle cell trait and renal disease.  Her work has also been instrumental in documenting the high risk of venous thromboembolism in sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait.  By defining risk factors for these complications, her research aims to improve the lives of individuals with sickle hemoglobinopathies.
