He completed residency training in internal medicine at Inova Fairfax Hospital and fellowship training in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Virginia Commonwealth University Health.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Shahab has a strong interest in innovation in gastrointestinal care, including digital health, virtual care, digital therapeutics and artificial intelligence. His publications have addressed liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and applications of large language models and vision-language models in gastroenterology. He serves on the American College of Gastroenterology Innovation and Technology Committee and the American Gastroenterological Association Committee for GI Innovation and Technology.
