Background
Meng Meng Xu, O.D., F.A.A.O., F.N.A.P., is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Xu has a background in advancing optometric education and delivering high quality, culturally competent eye care to underserved populations. She holds a doctorate of optometry from the University of Montreal, a residency from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and a master’s degree in public health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where she focused on health communication and health system leadership.
She has 15 years of clinical leadership experience as director of eye care services at the South Boston Community Health Center, where she supervised clinical teams and developed process improvement initiatives to enhance quality and access to care. Fluent in English, Mandarin and French, she is passionate about cross-cultural communication and health equity. Outside of clinic, she likes to coach and paddle on dragon boats.

Research Summary
Dr. Xu’s research program is interdisciplinary, focusing on the intersection of public health, health communication and clinical optometry. She investigates innovative models for delivering eye care and health information, particularly in underserved and global settings. This includes qualitative studies on the impact of social media in health communication and quantitative assessments of international educational exchange programs. The overarching goal of her work is to develop evidence-based strategies that improve health systems, enhance clinician training and expand equitable access to care.
