About Melissa Stockbridge

Primary Academic Title

Assistant Professor of Neurology

Background

I am an Assistant Professor in the Cerebrovascular Division of Neurology with a joint appointment in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a licensed speech-language pathologist. The core objective of my research is to improve outcomes for adults with acquired disorders of communication through (1) the development and integration of technology and instruments of assessment that inform a better understanding of brain structure-function relationships, the validation of novel approaches and adjuncts to traditional speech language therapy, and the incorporation of biological and psychological individual differences into therapy provision. By integrating emerging neuroimaging and machine learning technologies into cognitive-communication rehabilitation for people with disorders of communication due to brain injury caused by stroke or trauma or due to neurodegenerative disease, an important dimension of my work is not only to improve both precision and individualization of therapy for those with access to gold-standard care, but also to establish cost-effective solutions to the long-term management of neurogenic disorders of communication that are deployable in decentralized and resource-constrained settings.
