Background

Dr. Ozen is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her area of clinical expertise is Neonatology. Dr. Ozen’s research focuses on immunobiology and immunopathology of pregnancy, resultant fetal – neonatal immune system dysregulation and their neurodevelopmental impact, specifically mechanisms of inflammation/infection-induced brain injury, neuroimmunology, and high dimensional analysis of neonatal immune cells.

Dr. Ozen is actively involved with interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary groups in the Children Center, Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM), and Fetal Therapy Center (FTC) in providing evidence-based care. Dr. Ozen is an Attending Neonatologist at Johns Hopkins University Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and conducts outpatient complex prenatal consults for the Fetal Therapy Center patients.

Dr. Ozen received her medical school degree at the University of Istanbul, Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine, and completed her Pediatric residency at Hacettepe University, Hacettepe Children’s Hospital in Turkey, and per approval American Board of Pediatrics, a 2-year accelerated track at The Children’s Hospital at Sinai Baltimore in the United States. Dr. Ozen subsequently completed her Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Ozen is a former Ruth L. Kirschtein National Research Service Awardee (T32, Developmental, and Neonatal Biology Training Program) at Stanford University.

Research Summary

Dr. Maide Ozen is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Ozen is advancing her academic research career on Heme-oxygenase in health and inflammatory/immune diseases of the neonate at JHU with main focus on neuroimmunology, inflammatory protein/gene network and cluster analysis as a NIH/NICHD funded researcher. Dr. Ozen received a 5-year K08-A1 grant to study “The role of chorioamnionitis-induced perinatal alterations of Heme-oxygenase-1 (HO-1) pathway on neuroinflammation and neonatal white matter injury” in Fall 2022. In addition, Dr. Ozen is recently accepted to the Master of Science in Regenerative and Stem Cell Technologies, JHU Advanced Academic Programs to advance her research horizons by completing the classes proposed in her K08 Award. Additionally, Dr. Ozen is a past recipient of JHUSOM Clinician Scientist Award (JHUSOM CSA). She collaborates with Drs. Lauren Jantzie (primary mentor), Shenandoah Robinson (co-mentor) and Frances Northington (co-mentor). Clinically, Dr. Ozen is actively involved with interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary groups in the Children Center, Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM), and Fetal Therapy Center (FTC) in providing evidence-based care and completing complex prenatal consults for the Fetal Therapy Center patients. Dr. Ozen is the Director of Neonatal Simulation Education. She has established a NICU Fellow Simulation Program at JHU which runs quarterly, implemented Chest Tube Skills Segment and Neonatal Exchange Transfusion Skills Segment for continuing education of Neonatal Fellows and Providers. At a National level, Dr. Ozen works actively in Simulation Program Development. Dr. Ozen is a member of the National Neonatal Boot Camp Curriculum Development Committee for Neonatal Simulation. Dr. Ozen serves as an author and a reviewer for the Organization of Neonatal-Perinatal Training Program Directors (ONTPD) National Neonatology Curriculum’s (NNC) Simulation Curriculum Project. Additionally, Dr. Ozen is an Editor for American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) ONTPD Neonatology Flipped Classroom, Neonatal Neurology Section. Dr. Ozen is a member of the Fellowship Committee for The American Society for Reproductive Immunology.
