Background

Dr. Damarla is a specialist in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He is an expert in the diagnosis and management of all forms of acute respiratory failure, including asthma, pneumonia, C.O.P.D., neuromuscular diseases, and the acute respiratory distress syndrome. He also has extensive experience in the management of other life-threatening conditions such as gastrointestinal bleeding, pulmonary embolism, diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar states, and shock from sepsis, hypovolemia, and heart disease.

  • Work in the Mahendra Damarla Lab focuses primarily on the field of vascular biology. Much of our research involves exploring alternatives to mechanical ventilation as a therapy for acute lung injury. We investigate mitogen-activated protein kinase-activated protein kinase 2 as a method to mediate apoptosis during lung vascular permeability by regulating movement of cleaved caspase 3. We have also conducted research on the prevalence of confirmatory tests in patients hospitalized with congestive heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Research Summary

Dr. Damarla’s primary research focus is on the molecular mechanisms in the development of and recovery from the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a severe, life-threatening condition triggered by pneumonia, other severe infections, pancreatitis, trauma, and aspiration. One of his areas of interest is endothelial cell biology and diseases of the pulmonary vasculature with specific focus on non-canonical functions of apoptotic signaling pathways.
