M. Shafeeq Ahmed Ahmed, MD, MBA

M. Shafeeq Ahmed, MD, MBA, FACOG, is president of Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center, where he oversees hospital operations and strategic direction.

He assumed the role in July 2021 after serving as interim president since November 2020. Ahmed is also president of the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center Foundation, which provides philanthropic support to the hospital. Previously, he served as the hospital’s chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs.

Ahmed serves on the board of the Howard County Economic Development Authority and the Maryland Hospital Association, where he chairs the Council on Clinical and Quality Issues. He is a preceptor for residents in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Master of Health Administration program, and he is actively involved in the Johns Hopkins Administrative Fellowship program. From 2022 to 2024, he served on the board of Howard Community College.

Earlier in his career, Ahmed was chief operating officer/chief medical officer of Baystate Health’s Eastern Region in Springfield, Massachusetts, and a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Medical Corps.

Ahmed received his medical and bachelor’s degrees from Boston University, followed by a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Baystate Medical Center. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Isenberg School of Business at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. Ahmed is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Between 2014 and 2020, Becker’s Hospital Review named Ahmed one of the “100 Hospital and Health System Chief Medical Officers to Know.” He was also recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as a “Community Hospital CEO to Know” in 2024–2026.
