Dr. Lukasz Gondek is an Associate Professor of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Division of Hematologic Malignancies and serves as Director of the Adult Leukemia Program at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. He received his medical degree from the University of Silesia in Poland and his Ph.D. from the University of Warsaw. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, followed by fellowship training in hematology at Johns Hopkins. He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2014.

Dr. Gondek is a physician-scientist whose research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that drive the development and progression of myeloid malignancies. His laboratory studies clonal hematopoiesis and its evolution to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), with particular interest in the interplay between acquired genetic alterations, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the bone marrow microenvironment. His work aims to identify individuals at increased risk of developing myeloid malignancies and to develop strategies to prevent or intercept disease progression.

A major focus of Dr. Gondek’s research is also the development of highly sensitive molecular approaches for detecting measurable residual disease (MRD) in patients with AML and MDS. His group is investigating circulating cell-free DNA and other genomic approaches to improve the detection of residual leukemia, predict relapse, and guide treatment following chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation.

Clinically, Dr. Gondek specializes in the care of patients with myeloid malignancies, particularly MDS and AML, as well as individuals with clonal hematopoiesis and clonal cytopenias. He directs a dedicated clinic for patients with clonal hematopoiesis and serves as an attending physician on the inpatient adult leukemia service at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. His clinical and research programs are closely integrated, with the goal of translating discoveries in cancer genomics into improved approaches to risk assessment, disease prevention, and treatment.

Research Summary

Dr. Gondek’s primary research is to better understand the role of molecular events in initiation and progression of myelodysplastic syndromes and leukemia as well as develop novel targeted therapies to prevent disease progression and relapse.
