About Leah Ipema

Background
Dr. Leah Ipema is a Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her areas of clinical expertise include surgical critical care. Dr. Ipema received her undergraduate degree in Nursing from Trinity Christian College. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Dr. Ipema joined the Johns Hopkins Hospital as a nurse practitioner in 2022.
Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Ipema was a critical care nurse with experience across trauma, cardiac, neuro and medical intensive care units. Prior to her current position in the Weinberg Intensive Care Unit, she practiced as a nurse practitioner on the Medical Progressive Care Unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Her research interests include the use of high fidelity simulations to improve nursing confidence, and early identification of patients with sepsis. Dr. Ipema was the 2022 Johns Hopkins School of Nursing DNP Leadership Award recipient. She is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
