About Laurence Carroll

Primary Academic Title

Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Science

Background

Dr. Carroll earned his bachelor of science in Chemistry and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from University of Oxford, New College. Dr. Carroll’s career has been focused on a combination of organic synthesis and radiochemistry, for the development of new radiochemical methods and tracers for the imaging. He’s worked with multiple novel fluorine-18 radiotracers in the U.K. and U.S.A., from idea/structural development through to final GMP synthetic sequence.

His Ph.D. was specifically based around hypoxia, and the chemistry of the two main classes of imaging agent, leading to a number of publications. Concurrently, he began to work with biorthogonal chemistry, which continued into his work throughout his time at Imperial College being at the cutting edge of research into reactions such as the Inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction.

He has been at Johns Hopkins University since 2018, where he is an Assistant Professor in Radiology, working within the PET Center and interacting with targets in Oncology and Infection.
