Background

Neurologist Kelly Mills cares for patients who have movement disorders such as ataxia, dystonia, Parkinson’s disease, atypical parkinsonism and tremor. He evaluates and manages patients needing advanced therapies, such as deep brain stimulation, focused ultrasound or medication infusions to manage their movement symptoms. Additionally, he provides botulinum toxin treatment for various disorders.

Dr. Mills earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed residency training in neurology at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and remained there for fellowship training in movement disorders, which had a particular emphasis on deep brain stimulation to treat Parkinson’s disease, tremor and dystonia. Dr. Mills also holds a Master of Health Sciences from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

In his research, Dr. Mills explores the cognitive dysfunction that can occur in movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. He is particularly interested in describing the role of the basal ganglia in cognition, especially in the context of various diseases that can affect this structure.

His work focuses on clarifying how certain treatments might affect cognitive and psychiatric problems. He also works to develop new imaging biomarkers to detect mechanisms of disease, such as neuroinflammation in Parkinson’s disease.

Neuromodulation and Advanced Therapies Center

  • We investigate the brain networks and neurotransmitters involved in symptoms of movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, and the mechanisms by which modulating these networks through electrical stimulation affects these symptoms. We are particularly interested in the mechanisms through which neuromodulation therapies like deep brain stimulation affect non-motor brain functions, such as cognitive function and mood. We use imaging of specific neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine and dopamine, to understand the changes in brain chemistry associated with the clinical effects of deep brain stimulation and to predict which patients are likely to have changes in non-motor symptoms following DBS. Through collaborations with our neurosurgery colleagues, we explore brain function by making recordings during DBS surgery during motor and non-motor tasks. Dr. Mills collaborates with researchers in the Department of Neurosurgery, the Division of Geriatric and Neuropsychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and in the Division of Nuclear Medicine within the Department of Radiology to translate neuroimaging and neurophysiology findings into clinical applications.

It was my observation during this visit that Dr. Mills, was attentive, and generous with his time. It seemed that communication was significantly improved by his ability to use recording rather than in the past when he was taking his notes by typing rather than having face-to-face interaction. It was much more personal by being able to speak, face-to-face rather than what I experienced in the past when he was looking away from me and typing.

Dr. Mills is one of the best doctors I've ever had the pleasure to work with. He responds to questions with patience and sincerity. He probes for pertinent details in ways that convey that he truly cares. And his memory about personal detail, aside from any natural proclivities he may have, indicates someone who was truly listening.

Dr.. Kelly Mills, should be the ""Poster Doctor"" for John's Hopkins Medicine. Wicked smart, he deeply cares about his patients and strives diligently to ensure they understand what is taking place. His thoughtfulness and intellect were evident throughout the baselining of my Deep Brain Stimulation system. I presented a complex requirement and he worked successfully to find me a narrow window that was open and both reduced tremors while preventing dyskinesia. Friendly and humble, Dr. Mills represents the excellence that the Johns Hopkins system is striving for.
