Background

Dr. Karan Rao is an assistant professor of radiology and radiological science in the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Johns Hopkins Medicine. His clinical focus includes the treatment of complex vascular, oncologic, and hepatobiliary conditions. He specializes in the management of liver and kidney cancers, hepatocellular carcinoma, neuroendocrine tumors, portal hypertension, aneurysms, venous disorders, benign prostatic hyperplasia, fibroids, and dialysis access–related conditions. His procedural expertise includes minimally invasive interventional radiology treatments such as embolization and ablation therapies, vascular and endovascular interventions, dialysis access management, image-guided biopsies, percutaneous drainage procedures, and advanced liver-directed therapies including chemoembolization, radioembolization, TIPS, and post-transplant hepatic artery interventions.

Dr. Rao earned a B.S.E. in biomedical engineering from the University of Iowa and his M.D. from the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. He completed diagnostic radiology residency training with early specialization in interventional radiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, followed by a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Johns Hopkins Medicine faculty in 2025.
