Dr. Gudenkauf earned her medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She completed residency training in internal medicine through the MedStar Health Internal Medicine Residency Program in Baltimore. This was followed by residency training in neurology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she remained for fellowship training in vascular neurology. She then pursued an academic appointment at the University of Iowa Department of Neurology, where she began clinical research focusing on cerebrovascular disease arising from both infectious and autoimmune vasculitides. Her current research largely focuses on the effects of human immunodeficiency virus on cerebrovascular health.
