Background
Dr. Jose I. Suarez graduated from Javeriana University School of Medicine in Bogota, Colombia. He subsequently trained in Internal Medicine in Bogota and at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City, and then completed his neurology residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, followed by a fellowship in neurocritical care and stroke at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD (USA). After completion of his training, Dr. Suarez joined the faculty at the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), where he became the Maxine Stone and John A Flower Chair of acute neurology (07/1998 – 01/2017). He then became the head of vascular neurology and neurocritical care and a tenured professor of neurology and neurosurgery at the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and the CHI Baylor St Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, TX (USA) from 02/2007 – 07/2017. He is currently professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine, neurology, and neurosurgery, and Chief of the Neurocritical Care Division at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.

Research Interests
Dr. Suarez’s expertise includes the care of stroke (both ischemic and hemorrhagic) and neurocritical care patients (including those with elevated intracranial pressure [ICP]), and the interpretation of transcranial Doppler ultrasounds.
Research Summary
Dr. Suarez has participated in very exciting scholarly activities throughout his academic career. He has been the principal investigator (PI) for successful NINDS-funded applications for the ALISAH Study and for the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Neurocritical Care Research Conferences. In addition, He is the co-Chair and PI for the NINDS- and NLM-funded Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms (UIA) and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) Common Data Elements (CDE) Project and PI for the PRINCE Study (257 participating sites from 47 countries). Dr. Suarez was a co-Investigator and regulatory compliance officer for the PCORI-funded SETPOINT 2 clinical trial. He also has been a member of DSMB for several Phase III clinical trials, including the NINDS-funded TBI in Latin America Lifespan Analysis and a member of the Executive Committee for the NINDS-funded ATACH II Trial. Dr. Suarez’s expertise includes the care of stroke (both ischemic and hemorrhagic) and neurocritical care patients (including those with elevated intracranial pressure [ICP]), and the interpretation of transcranial Doppler ultrasounds. In addition, Dr. Suarez has fully developed neurocritical care programs and neurovascular laboratory at CWRU and BCM. He has authored or co-authored over 300 manuscripts in the areas of stroke and critical care neurology and neurosurgery in reputable journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Stroke, Critical Care Medicine, Neurology, JAMA Neurology, Lancet Neurology, and Neurocritical Care, among others. Dr. Suarez served as a member of the Editorial Board of Stroke for more than a decade and is the editor of several books, including the Critical Care Neurology and Neurosurgery textbook. Moreover, Dr. Suarez also is a member of the Board of Directors (Ex-Officio) and Past President of the Neurocritical Care Society and the founding and former Chair of the Neurocritical Care Research Network (NCRN).
Dr. Suarez has mentored over 12 pre-doctoral students, 55 post-doctoral fellows, including 3 who received Mentored Career Development Awards from the NIH, and 4 who received T-32 awards. Moreover, Dr. Suarez is the Director of the Precision Medicine Center of Excellence (PMCOE) for Neurocritical Care. The overall aim of this PMCOE is to leverage high-resolution multi-dimensional data, mechanistic hypotheses, and advanced modeling (including artificial intelligence) to effectively and efficiently enhance the care and outcome of critically ill neurological patients.
