Background

Jennifer Fitzgerald is a neonatologist in the Division of Neonatology at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. She specializes in the management of premature babies and newborns with high-risk or complex health conditions.

Dr. Fitzgerald received her medical degree at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Faculty of Health Sciences. She then completed her pediatric residency at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and her fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. During her fellowship, Dr. Fitzgerald spearheaded a quality improvement project to harmonize unit practices for initial and continued ventilator management of premature infants. This led to a decrease in intubation days for the premature infants and a decrease in the number of days to the first extubation attempt without increasing reintubation rates.

Research Interests

Respiratory/ventilator management; Extremely premature infants; Extubation outcomes; Bronchopulmonary dysplasia; Quality improvement; Proteomics

Research Summary

Dr. Fitzgerald’s research interests include respiratory/ventilator management, extremely premature infants, extubation outcomes, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, quality improvement and proteomics. She has a funded mentored research grant focused on using proteomics to determine protein signatures for extubation outcomes in extremely premature neonates. This research aims to discover biomarkers that can be used at the bedside to help clinicians determine extubation outcomes for these neonates and find if certain techniques can be targeted to prevent extubation failure.
