About Hye Young Heo
Primary Academic Title
Associate Professor of Radiology and Radiological Science
Background
Dr. Hye Young Heo is an Assistant Professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Radiology and Radiological Science and F.M. Kirby Research Center for Functional Brain Imaging at Kennedy Krieger Institute, specializing in magnetic resonance research. Dr. Heo's research focuses on developing new methodologies of in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study brain function and diseases. Dr. Heo earned his B.S. degree in biomedical engineering from Konkuk University, M.S. degree in biomedical engineering from Kyung Hee University, and Ph.D. degree from the University of Iowa. He performed a fellowship on in vivo MRI at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Heo joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2016. He is also an associate investigator/collaborator in Acute Stroke Research Section at NINDS/NIH.
Research Summary
As a biomedical engineering researcher specializing in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Dr. Heo is interested in developing cutting-edge technologies and optimizing these technologies for clinical applications. He is also interested in novel MRI contrasts, such as chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) and T1rho. He focuses on developing, testing, and optimizing various novel proton exchange-based imaging technologies to speed up translation into the clinic and evaluating the potential of these methodologies in brain cancer diagnosis and therapy. In addition, he focuses on developing a proton exchange-based pH imaging technique that can be rapidly translated to routine clinical use to guide reperfusion therapies for hyper-acute stroke patients at various therapeutic time windows, as well as predict the risk of hemorrhagic transformation (HT) following acute ischemic stroke.
