Background

Dr. Heba Mostafa is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and serves as Director of the Microbiology Division and the Molecular Infectious Diseases Laboratory at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is an internationally recognized clinical microbiologist and molecular virologist with expertise in molecular diagnostics, genomic surveillance, infectious disease sequencing, and emerging viral pathogens. Dr. Mostafa also directs the Infectious Disease Sequencing Laboratory and the Microbiology Biocontainment Unit at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Mostafa earned her M.B.B.Ch. from Alexandria University in Egypt and her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Kansas. She completed a CPEP fellowship and clinical microbiology training at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Her research focuses on molecular diagnostics, respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, enteroviruses, and genomic epidemiology. She has authored more than 125 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed extensively to the development and evaluation of diagnostic assays and genomic surveillance programs. Dr. Mostafa currently serves as President-Elect of the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology and holds different editorial leadership roles including the manual of clinical microbiology, and the Journal of Clinical Virology.

Research Interests

Genomic surveillance of viruses and the correlation between viral evolution and disease severity. Understanding the respiratory virome and developing personalized molecular diagnostic panels for immunocompromised populations. Implementing innovative molecular diagnostics in the clinical microbiology laboratory
