Background

Dr. Gerard F. Anderson is a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He holds joint appointments in health policy and management and in international health at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research focuses on health policy. Dr. Anderson serves as director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Hospital Finance and Management.

His work encompasses studies of chronic conditions, comparative insurance systems in developing countries, medical education, health care payment reform and technology diffusion.

Dr. Anderson received his B.A. in economics from Haverford College. He earned his Ph.D. in public policy analysis at the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1983.

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Anderson held a variety of positions in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Secretary, where he helped to develop Medicare prospective payment legislation.

He has led health system reviews for The World Bank Group and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in many countries, and provided individual witness testimony in Congress more than 40 times.

Dr. Anderson has published more than 260 peer-reviewed articles and authored two books about health care payment policy. He serves on the editorial committees of a number of related publications.

  • Research in the Gerard Anderson Lab examines chronic conditions, comparative insurance systems in developing countries, medical education, health care payment reform and technology diffusion. We've conducted reviews of health systems for USAID and the World Bank in several countries.
