Background

Margaret “Geri” Keane is a gastroenterologist specializing in Therapeutic and Bariatric endoscopy. She primarily treats people who require assistance with weight loss or who have weight regain or a complication following Bariatric Surgery. She offers the full range of minimally invasive endoscopic approaches to weight loss, including endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, the gastric balloon procedure or transoral gastric outlet reduction. She also sees patients who have biliary complaints such as bile duct stones or strictures, cancers of the bile duct or and diseases of the pancreas such as pancreatic cysts,  to name a few. She performs all forms of therapeutic EUS and ERCP including cholangioscopy.

Dr. Keane earned her medical degree at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical school in London. She completed her internal medicine residency at The Hammersmith and Charing Cross hospitals in London, followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at University College London Hospitals, the Royal Free Hospital and King’s College Hospital in London. During her gastroenterology fellowship, Dr. Keane undertook a master’s degree in medical education and a Ph.D. at University College London. Her doctorate explored novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for the management of pancreatic cysts. Following her gastroenterology fellowship, Dr. Keane completed a fellowship in hepatology and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography/endoscopic ultrasound at King’s College London, followed by a two-year advanced endoscopy fellowship at Johns Hopkins. 

She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom and is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is a recipient of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 2022 Endoscopic Training Award, which enabled her to gain dedicated training in bariatric endoscopy at Mohak bariatric center in Indore, India, one of the busiest bariatric centers in the world.

Dr. Keane’s research interests include Bariatric Endoscopy, Endoscopic innovation and early diagnostic strategies for pancreatic and biliary tract cancers including the management of pancreatic cysts. She has published more than 70 original articles, editorials, book chapters and review articles.
