Dr. Mekonnen was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he attended Saint Joseph High School. Dr. Mekonnen received his medical degree from Jimma University School of Medicine and Master of Science in clinical epidemiology from the Netherland Institute Health Sciences. He completed his adult neurology residency from Howard University Hospital. In addition, Dr. Mekonnen completed a fellowship in vascular neurology at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He was a Fellow in Neurological Critical Care at California Pacific Medical Center from 2012-2013.
Following his training, he entered academic career at Howard University. He was neurology clerkship and course director, and program director of the Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke Care at Howard University Hospital. Since July 2019, Dr. Mekonnen has been practicing stroke and general neurology in DC-Metro area, with admitting privileges at Suburban Hospital and Prince George’s Hospital Center.
