Background

Dr. Elif Esra Gultekin Elbir is a hematopathologist and practices at Sibley Memorial Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine. She earned her medical degree from Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine. Before transitioning to pathology, she completed a five-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Turkiye and practiced as an obstetrician-gynecologist, caring for women with both routine and high-risk pregnancies. During her clinical career, she gained experience in obstetric and gynecologic surgery, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, maternal-fetal medicine and women's health. Her passion for clinical research led her to join the University of Florida College of Medicine as a Research Fellow in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. There, she coordinated multiple prospective and retrospective clinical studies investigating placenta accreta spectrum disorders, postpartum hemorrhage, transfusion medicine, thromboelastography, intrauterine infection and inflammation, and quality improvement initiatives in obstetric care.

Dr. Gultekin Elbir's transition into pathology was driven by her interest in disease mechanisms and diagnostic medicine. She subsequently completed residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Florida before pursuing fellowship training in Hematopathology at Johns Hopkins University.

She specializes in the diagnosis of benign and malignant hematologic disorders through comprehensive morphologic evaluation, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics, and multidisciplinary clinicopathologic correlation. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented her work at national and international scientific meetings in both pathology and obstetrics and gynecology. Her research continues to focus on improving diagnostic accuracy, multidisciplinary collaboration, and patient care through translational and outcomes-based research.
