About Dustin Gable
Johns Hopkins Physician
Background
Dustin Gable is a child neurologist and physician-scientist specializing in neuromuscular disease and genetics, with a focus on spinal muscular atrophy and bulbar dysfunction.
Dr. Gable earned his Bachelor of Science in biomedical science as a Goldwater scholar from The Ohio State University. He then earned his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in human genetics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Medical Scientist Training Program, where he worked with Mary Armanios, M.D., to identify and characterize genetic causes of short telomere syndromes and mechanisms of telomerase RNA maturation. He completed a combined residency in pediatrics and neurology at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he served as chief resident and pursued postdoctoral work studying lower cranial motor neuron development with Elizabeth Engle, M.D. He subsequently completed a fellowship in neuromuscular medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Through his research, Dr. Gable aims to better understand how neuromuscular disorders affect cranial motor neuron and brainstem development among children and adults. He works in the laboratory of Charlotte Sumner, M.D., supported by the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke K12 Child Neurologist Career Development Program. Here, his research integrates his expertise in human genetics and RNA biology with diseases of the developing peripheral nervous system, particularly as they relate to bulbar function, fetal neurodevelopment and the mechanisms by which RNA misprocessing drives disease.
