Background
Dr. Patel is a nephrologist and physician-scientist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After receiving her Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, she matriculated into the Medical Scientist Training Program at Northwestern University, where she developed foundational clinical and research skills. Dr. Patel then completed Internal Medicine Residency and Nephrology Fellowship at Yale University, where she developed a passion for patient-centered care for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Dr. Patel joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in 2021 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology. She has since then led multiple research projects focused on delivering patient-centered care, namely in implementation of patient-reported outcome measures in routine nephrology care. She became the Associate Director for Ambulatory Services for the Division of Nephrology in 2025, supporting faculty and trainees to deliver high-quality care to patients with kidney disease. Dr. Patel additionally leads ambulatory dialysis education and experiences for nephrology trainees.

Research Summary
Dr. Patel's research program focuses on symptom assessment and management during usual care of people with non-dialysis-dependent CKD. She has been Principal Investigator of multiple research grants focused on implementation of an electronic patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) into the electronic health record system (EHR) to be used in routine nephrology care. Dr. Patel is working with clinical care team members and patients to develop interventions that can facilitate routine symptom assessment and management.
Dr. Patel is additionally engaged in collaborative efforts to understand the experiences of patients on hemodialysis, including steps required to obtain sustainable vascular access.

Dr. Patel is truly a godsend! From the moment I met her, she has been incredibly kind, professional, and knowledgeable. I was terrified when I first learned about my condition, but she took the time to walk me through everything with such care and clarity. Her compassion and expertise made all the difference.
