Deepa U. Menon, MD

Child neurologist Deepa Menon is a neurodevelopmental disabilities specialist with nearly two decades of experience caring for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental, behavioral and developmental conditions. She is also a leader in expanding access to specialty neurodevelopmental care through telemedicine, particularly for underserved and rural communities across Maryland. She serves as an associate professor of clinical neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and assistant medical director of the Center for Autism Services, Science and Innovation (CASSI) at Kennedy Krieger Institute.

Her clinical and research interests focus on early identification and treatment of autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental disabilities, reducing healthcare disparities through telemedicine, and improving access to specialized care for children in underserved communities. In 2013, Dr. Menon founded and continues to lead Kennedy Krieger Institute’s telemedicine neurodevelopmental consultation program, bringing specialty services to rural regions of Maryland. Her research has examined diagnosis and care of children with autism, developmental screening, telehealth implementation, health equity and family access to services.

Dr. Menon earned her medical degree from Madras Medical College in Chennai, India. She completed pediatric training in the Caribbean and at Cook County Children’s Hospital in Chicago before practicing as a pediatrician and medical director in Ohio. She subsequently completed a fellowship in neurodevelopmental disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute and The Johns Hopkins University. She also earned a master’s in healthcare management from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and completed the Oxford Women’s Leadership Development Program through the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School.

Dr. Menon is committed to education and workforce development. She serves as faculty for the Maternal and Child Health Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Program at Kennedy Krieger Institute and has trained medical students, residents, fellows, social work trainees and community healthcare providers. She helped develop innovative tele-education programs — including Project ECHO and the Teaching Excellence in Neuro Development (TEND) clinic at Kennedy Krieger Institute — to improve provider knowledge and expand access to expertise in neurodevelopmental care.

An active leader in autism advocacy and policy, Dr. Menon has served on national committees of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and educational resources on autism, neurodevelopmental disorders and telemedicine.
