Background
Dr. Berman is an anesthesiologist specializing in high-risk obstetric anesthesiology, anesthesia for fetal surgery, general adult anesthesiology, and medical education. Additionally, he serves as associate program director of the anesthesiology residency program and founding director of the categorical anesthesiology intern year at Johns Hopkins.
He attended medical school at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and elected to remain at Mount Sinai for his anesthesiology residency. During medical school, he was awarded the Jagust award for highest-performing medical student in anesthesiology and went on to be selected by his peers for induction in the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He was a member of the Eliasberg Research Program and the clinician-educator track as a resident.
He then completed a fellowship in obstetric, gynecologic and fetal anesthesia at Johns Hopkins, where he received numerous clinical and teaching awards. He subsequently joined the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine as full-time faculty.
Since joining ACCM, Dr. Berman has been appointed assistant program director of the anesthesiology residency and received the Rising Faculty Award, the Beattie Teacher of the Year Award several times, and the Most Innovative Faculty award. He was also awarded the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology Teacher of the Year Award. He is a core member of the hepatobiliary anesthesia team, performing complex hepatobiliary procedures on a regular basis. He also serves as a phone consultant for the Malignant Hyperthermia Hotline.
Dr. Berman has a special interest in cardiac disease in pregnancy and the use of peripartum and perioperative echocardiography as well as anesthesia for fetal surgery. He serves on a variety of national and international committees in the anesthesiology community. He also obtained a Masters in Education for the Health Professions through Johns Hopkins in 2024. His research interests include personal financial literacy among physicians, curriculum design/development and medical student & resident education.
