Background
Surgeon-scientist Carole Fakhry specializes in head and neck cancer, benign tumors of the head and neck, and benign tumors of the parotid and submandibular glands and neck, including schwannomas and paragangliomas. Working with a multidisciplinary team of experts, she cares for patients with new and recurrent diagnosis of HPV-related cancers of the oropharynx (tonsil, base of tongue), tongue cancers, throat cancer, larynx cancer, skin cancer and salivary gland cancers (parotid, submandibular gland), among others. She has led and developed teams and clinical trials to provide the most innovative care, and often sees patients seeking second opinions.
Dr. Fakhry completed medical school, residency training in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery and fellowship training in head and neck surgical oncology at Johns Hopkins. She earned a master’s degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she is a professor in the Department of Epidemiology.
At the foundation of Dr. Fakhry’s clinical role as a head and neck surgeon is advocacy for her patients’ care. This includes listening, understanding their needs, expediting care for those newly diagnosed with cancer or those with a suspicion of cancer, and ensuring that all members of the team meet patients in a timely fashion prior to decisions about treatment and initiate therapy within one month of diagnosis. In addition, she has led the development of educational materials and care pathways to expedite patient care at Johns Hopkins.
A national leader in the treatment of head and neck cancer, Dr. Fakhry serves as the surgical co-chair of the National Cancer Institute Head and Neck Steering Committee and the head and neck section editor of Cancer. She has served on several other editorial boards and leadership positions in the American Head and Neck Society, and is regularly invited to lecture on head and neck cancer nationally and internationally.

Research Summary
Dr. Fakhry’s research focuses on the role of HPV in head and neck squamous cell cancer. Her group has demonstrated that the presence of HPV confers a prognostic advantage to individuals with oropharyngeal cancer both at the time of first diagnosis and recurrence. They have described the risk factors for HPV-related oropharynx cancer, and helped to describe the evolving epidemiology of HPV-related head and neck cancer. They have also shown that detection of HPV in blood and oral rinse can predict tumor recurrence. They are now evaluating strategies for earlier detection and screening of HPV-related oropharynx cancers.
Dr. Fakhry’s research also includes helping patients identify what is most important to them during treatment. Based upon interviews with survivors, they created a decision support tool, which reviews treatment options and is meant to aid discussion between patients and the clinicians who treat them. They have also created risk calculators to help inform risk of death or recurrence after diagnosis with oropharynx cancer, and risk of developing oropharynx cancer in the first place.
