Background

Benjamin Schindel is a neurodevelopmental disabilities specialist who cares for children, adolescents and young adults with a wide range of neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and complex neurologic and developmental disorders. He has a particular clinical interest in supporting adolescents and young adults with disabilities as they navigate transitions in care and adulthood.

Dr. Schindel received both his medical degree and a Master of Public Health in epidemiology from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital in New York before pursuing fellowship training in neurodevelopmental disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Schindel’s research focuses on mental health and suicide risk among children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disabilities, particularly youth who have autism. His work has examined suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and adolescents with autism, suicide risk screening in pediatric neurodevelopmental clinics, and factors affecting the diagnosis and care of individuals with developmental disabilities.

An active educator, Dr. Schindel serves as associate project director of interdisciplinary clinical training for the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Beyond his clinical, research and teaching activities, Dr. Schindel serves as clinical director for Special Olympics Maryland and contributes to disability advocacy and community engagement through partnerships with Special Olympics International and other organizations dedicated to improving health outcomes for individuals with developmental disabilities.
