Background

Dr. Benjamin Joseph Michael Horn is an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

He received his undergraduate degrees within Organismal Biology and German Studies at the University of Arizona. He subsequently completed a master's degree within Bioethics at Kansas City University before receiving his medical degree from Rocky Vista University. He completed his Internal Medicine and Pediatrics training at Louisiana State University Health Shreveport. Dr. Horn is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Training Program.

Dr. Horn’s scholarly interests lie at the intersection of bioethics, palliative medicine, and medical humanities. His work explores ethical and structural disparities in serious illness and end-of-life care, with particular emphasis on the experiences of historically marginalized populations and the transition of patients between pediatric and adult palliative care. He is also interested in how communication, narrative, and relational dynamics shape medical decision-making. Through this work, he aims to advance more equitable, person-centered models of care that integrate ethical inquiry with compassionate clinical practice.

In addition to his clinical role, Dr. Horn is an active member of the Johns Hopkins Hospital ethics committee.
