Dr. Al-Faraaz Kassam is a liver and kidney transplant surgeon at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
His clinical areas of expertise include liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, and living donation.
He completed his medical degree at Rush Medical College, followed by a general surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he also earned his MBA. He then completed an Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship here at Johns Hopkins before joining as faculty.
In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Kassam has contributed meaningfully to research in surgical education and equity in academic medicine. His work includes publications on unconscious bias in residency selection and burnout among transplant fellows. He is also investigating methods to reduce moral injury in trainees and improve surgical simulation in high stakes robotic and open operations.
He is the recipient of several awards, including the Charles M. Balch, M.D. Endowed International Fellowship in Surgical Oncology Award and the Society of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons Outstanding Minimally Invasive Surgery Resident Award from the University of Cincinnati.
He is a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, and the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.
