Dr. Abbal Koirala is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and serves as the Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Glomerular Clinic. Since joining the faculty in August 2024, he has specialized in the management of complex glomerular diseases and providing expert second opinions.
His professional career in the United States began at Weill Cornell Medical College, where he served as a Research Assistant in Multiple Myeloma (2010–2011). He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois (2011–2014). Prior to his sub-specialty training, Dr. Koirala served as a Hospitalist and Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) from 2014 to 2016, where he focused on clinical care and quality improvement.
Dr. Koirala subsequently completed a nephrology and glomerulonephritis fellowship at the University of Washington, Seattle, remaining there as a Clinical Assistant Professor from 2020 to 2024. His clinical and research interests center on glomerular diseases and onco-nephrology, drawing on his extensive background in internal medicine and plasma cell research to treat complex renal conditions.

He is Extremely knowledgeable, and when the situation gets overwhelming for me with a lot of unknown, complicated decisions and outcomes, he takes control and gives me clear, Precise direction that is very comforting to me.
