Background
Dr. Vivek Srikar Yedavalli, M.D., M.S., FAHA, is an Associate Professor of Radiology and Radiological Science, Neurology, and Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He serves as Director of Clinical Practice Strategy, Director of Stroke, Neurovascular, and Perfusion Imaging, Director of Neuroradiology Research, and Assistant Director of the Department of Radiology Physician Scientist Incubator Program (RAD-PSI). He previously served as Chief of Neuroradiology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center from 2022 to 2026. His work integrates clinical neuroradiology, translational research, multidisciplinary education, and health-system leadership to advance the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular disease.
Dr. Yedavalli directs the Stroke, Neurovascular, and Perfusion Imaging Laboratory (SNAPLab), where his research focuses on imaging biomarkers of collateral circulation, cerebral perfusion, venous outflow, and recovery after ischemic stroke. His work includes the development and evaluation of prolonged venous transit and the Perfusion Collateral Impairment Score as prognostic imaging markers, as well as studies of treatment selection and outcomes in large-core and distal medium-vessel occlusion stroke. He also investigates advanced MRI techniques, including arterial spin labeling, MR fingerprinting, and spectroscopy, to characterize cerebrovascular physiology and vascular malformations. As of October 2026, he has authored or coauthored more than 300 PubMed-indexed publications, including 244 original research articles and 121 original research publications as first or senior author.
His research has received support through the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Research Seed and Research Scholar grants, the Foundation of the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), and the Johns Hopkins RAD-PSI program, for which he was the inaugural recipient. These awards have supported investigations of MR spectroscopy in stroke recovery, artificial intelligence–based collateral assessment, and MR fingerprinting arterial spin labeling for arteriovenous malformation characterization. He also serves as a co-investigator on NIH-funded research and as principal investigator on industry-supported studies evaluating artificial intelligence platforms for stroke imaging. His distinctions include the Johns Hopkins Junior Faculty Clinical Research Award in 2023, selection as a Junior Fellow of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 2023, election as a Fellow of the American Heart Association in 2025, and the ASNR Past Presidents Leadership Development Scholarship in 2026.
Dr. Yedavalli holds national leadership roles across radiology and stroke organizations. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Academy of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research and co-chairs its Council of Early Career Investigators in Imaging and Council of Distinguished Investigators. Within the American Society of Functional Neuroradiology, he serves as Treasurer, an Executive Committee member, and Chair of the Clinical Practice Committee. He also co-chairs imaging programming for the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association International Stroke Conference, represents ASNR on the NINDS Brain Attack Coalition, and chairs the Diagnostic Neuroimaging Committees of the MAD-MT and MISTA multicenter research consortia.
His editorial contributions include serving as Stroke Images Editor and an Editorial Board member for Stroke, as well as an Editorial Board member and Guest Editor for Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology. He previously completed the American Journal of Neuroradiology editorial fellowship and the Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology Editor-in-Training program. He received Stroke’s Outstanding Reviewer recognition in 2024 and AJNR’s Distinguished Reviewer recognition in 2024, 2025, and 2026. He also contributes to scientific peer review through grant-review activities for RSNA, ASNR, and international research funding organizations.
In clinical leadership, Dr. Yedavalli advances stroke imaging protocols, emergency radiology operations, workforce planning, and appropriate imaging utilization. His collaborative quality-improvement work with emergency medicine and trauma colleagues at Johns Hopkins Bayview helped reduce low-yield CT cervical and thoracic spine orders by 55% and CT head and neck angiography orders by 30%. His broader efforts include implementing advanced perfusion imaging, improving MRI workflow, and strengthening collaboration among neuroradiology, stroke neurology, neurosurgery, and emergency medicine.
Education and mentorship remain central to Dr. Yedavalli’s academic mission. He teaches residents and fellows across radiology, neurology, and neurosurgery and mentors medical students, research fellows, graduate students, and junior faculty in research design, scientific writing, grant development, and career advancement. His mentees have earned research grants, editorial appointments, leadership positions, and faculty promotions. A recipient of the Department of Radiology Education Award during residency, he emphasizes focused instruction, progressive autonomy, and individualized mentorship to develop independent clinicians and physician-scientists.
