Background
Dr. Clipman is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. His research sits at the intersection of computational genetics, network science, and infectious disease epidemiology. His group develops graph-based computational methods — including network models, viral phylodynamics, pangenome graphs, and geometric deep learning — to determine how infections spread through populations and where interventions can interrupt transmission. His current work spans HIV and hepatitis C virus transmission in high-burden settings, bioinformatic methods for characterizing the human plasma virome and hepatitis B virus variation, and evidence-linked artificial intelligence systems for clinical decision support and medical education.
Dr. Clipman co-leads an NIH R01 characterizing the human plasma virome and serves in the Multiomics Core of an NIH U19 hepatitis B and HIV cure consortium. He received the NIH Director's New Innovator Award (DP2) from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which supports exceptionally creative early-career investigators pursuing high-risk, high-reward research. He is also the recipient of the Next Generation Scholar Award from the Center for Innovative Medicine. He received his B.A. in Bioinformatics from Franklin & Marshall College, completed a fellowship in Bioinformatics at the National Institute on Aging’s Laboratory of Neurogenetics, and earned a Master of Science in Public Health and a Ph.D. in Genetic Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins University.
