Dr. Sairam Geethanath is an Associate Professor in the Johns Hopkins Department of Radiology and Radiological Science and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncology.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumentation from Visvesvaraya Technological University before going on to a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Dr. Geethanath’s research focuses on making MRI accessible to the nearly two-thirds of the world's population who currently lack access to this essential imaging technology. His laboratory designs, builds, and translates in-house advances in MR engineering, imaging physics, artificial intelligence, and autonomous imaging to enable clinically impactful neuroimaging. These innovations support research and translational applications spanning brain development, pediatric brain tumors, and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Research Summary
According to the WHO, two-thirds of the world does not have access to MRI, a life-saving technology. My laboratory focuses on changing this status quo by developing tools, methods, and scanners to deliver accessible MRI solutions. Specifically, we focus on providing structural imaging performance at par with 3T MRI to image cancer and infectious diseases, building on ideas in deep learning, genetic algorithms, hardware design and electromagnetic simulations.
