Background

Dr. Monica Mukherjee is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and serves as Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Echocardiography Program, Medical Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Program Director for Advanced Echocardiography and Multimodality Imaging, and Director of Echocardiographic Research. She is an internationally recognized expert in multimodality cardiovascular imaging with a research focus on right heart adaptation, pulmonary vascular disease, cardiopulmonary hemodynamics, and connective tissue disease–associated cardiovascular complications, particularly systemic sclerosis. Her work integrates advanced echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, invasive hemodynamics, and translational phenotyping to characterize mechanisms of right ventricular adaptation and dysfunction.

Dr. Mukherjee graduated summa cum laude from the University of Florida with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Behavioral Neuroscience and Psychology. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, completed her Internal Medicine residency at Drexel University College of Medicine, and subsequently returned to George Washington for fellowship training in Cardiovascular Disease. She also earned a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiologic and Biostatistical Methods for Public Health and Clinical Research, where she was awarded the Johns Hopkins Dean’s Scholarship for academic excellence.

Dr. Mukherjee serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Heart Association, Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, and the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, and is Associate Editor of Echo Research and Practice. She serves as Chair of the American Heart Association Cardiac Imaging and Intervention Committee, Chair of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) Research Oversight Committee, Co Chair of the ASE Guidelines and Standards Committee, and is a member of the ASE Board of Directors. She served as Writing Chair for the 2025 ASE Guidelines for Echocardiographic Assessment of the Right Heart and Pulmonary Hypertension.

Her research program is supported by the National Institutes of Health/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, U.S. Department of Defense, National Scleroderma Foundation, and CHEST Foundation. She has received multiple national and institutional awards, including the Johns Hopkins Clinician Scientist Award and recognition as one of the American Society of Echocardiography Top 25 Young Investigators.
