Background
Dr. Marquita Genies is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Medical Director of Acute Care Inpatient Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Her work focuses on improving the quality, safety, efficiency, and equity of care delivered to hospitalized children through clinical operations, systems redesign, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the translation of evidence into reliable clinical practice.
Dr. Genies earned her undergraduate degree from Spelman College, followed by a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. She completed her pediatrics residency at the University of North Carolina and a General Academic Pediatrics Fellowship at Johns Hopkins. Her fellowship training focused on patient safety, quality improvement, and medical education and included completion of the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute Patient Safety and Quality Leadership Academy.
Early in her faculty career, Dr. Genies focused on improving healthcare value by reducing unwarranted variation in clinical practice and accelerating the implementation of evidence-based care. As Chair of the Department of Pediatrics High Value Care Committee and the department’s representative to the Johns Hopkins Health System High Value Care Committee, she led multidisciplinary initiatives aimed at ensuring patients received the right care, at the right time, in the right clinical setting. She also held national leadership roles within the High Value Practice Academic Alliance, helping lead a collaborative of more than 20 academic children’s centers focused on reducing low-value care and serving as a leader for its national pediatric conference.
Dr. Genies’ career subsequently expanded into medical education and institutional leadership. She served as Associate Program Director of the Harriet Lane Pediatric Residency Program and Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Postdoctoral Affairs at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In these roles, she worked at the intersection of education, patient safety, workforce strategy, and organizational culture. She partnered with departmental and institutional leaders on strategic planning, trainee workforce needs, and organizational change; participated in the review of patient safety events involving trainees; and helped align educational programs with evolving accreditation requirements and health system priorities. Her work in medical education has also included curriculum development, faculty development, mentorship, and nationally recognized programs focused on health equity, bias mitigation, and inclusive learning environments.
As Medical Director of Acute Care Inpatient Pediatrics, Dr. Genies now applies this experience to clinical operations across Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. She leads initiatives focused on patient flow and throughput, discharge efficiency, interdisciplinary communication, care coordination, patient safety, and operational reliability. Her work includes redesigning inpatient rounding and care-delivery processes, strengthening collaboration among physicians, nurses, case management, social work, and other interdisciplinary teams, and developing systems to identify and address barriers to timely transitions of care. She also participates in the review of safety events, patient and family concerns, and complex clinical and organizational issues to identify opportunities for systems improvement.
Across her work in pediatric hospital medicine, quality and safety, medical education, health equity, and clinical operations, Dr. Genies is focused on building healthcare systems that are safer, more reliable, efficient, and patient-centered while supporting the physicians, nurses, trainees, and interdisciplinary teams who deliver care.
