Background

Dr. Janet Record is a clinician-educator with a focus on curriculum development and teaching patient-centered care and communication. She is Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and an associate professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Her work in curriculum development has centered around contributing to the development and growth of the Johns Hopkins Person-Centered Care (Aliki) Curriculum for residents and students on the inpatient general medical service at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. In her work as Assistant Dean for UME, she works with the Associate Dean for UME to oversee the 4-year MD curriculum, leading ongoing curriculum review and quality improvement efforts with a current focus on improving coverage of structural competency, optimizing educational methods, partnering with students and faculty through task forces as needs are identified, and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards. She is co-President of the Society of Bedside Medicine, which focuses on education for evidence-based physical diagnosis skills and patient-centered bedside medicine. She serves as director of the internal medicine subinternship at the Bayview campus. She received her BA from Baylor University in 1998 and her MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 2003. She completed her internal medicine residency in the Johns Hopkins Bayview internal medicine residency program and served as a chief resident from 2007-2008.​

Janet Record Lab

  • Research in the Janet Record Lab focuses on medical education and patient-centered care. We're currently developing a curriculum for internal medicine residents in the inpatient general medicine service setting. The curriculum teaches residents to use hand-carried ultrasound for imaging the inferior vena cava to assess volume status.
