Background
Dr. Hunki Kwon’s research combines neuroscience, neuroimaging and computational data science to better understand brain development, cognition and neurological disease. He specializes in the analysis of multimodal neuroimaging and electrophysiological data acquired using electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, functional MRI and diffusion MRI. His work focuses particularly on epilepsy, thalamocortical brain networks, sleep physiology and neurodevelopmental disorders, with the goal of identifying biomarkers of cognitive dysfunction and developing novel therapeutic approaches to improve outcomes for children and adults with neurological conditions.
Dr. Kwon earned an integrated master’s and doctorate (M.S./Ph.D.) in biomedical engineering at Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea, and pursued postdoctoral training in the Department of Neurology at Yale School of Medicine. He later completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he was subsequently appointed as an instructor in neurology. His work there focused on electrophysiological biomarkers, sleep-dependent memory consolidation and developmental epilepsy.
Dr. Kwon has authored more than 45 peer-reviewed publications, including original research and review articles spanning neuroimaging, epilepsy, cognitive neuroscience and sleep research. His studies have advanced understanding of thalamocortical connectivity, human consciousness, sleep spindle development, and the relationship between sleep and memory in pediatric epilepsy. He currently serves as an investigator on multiple studies aimed at developing neurophysiological biomarkers for neurological disorders.
