Background
Dr. Francis Deng is an expert in neuroradiology and head and neck imaging.
He is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and earned his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. He then completed a medical internship at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, followed by diagnostic radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, both affiliates of Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Deng is an internationally recognized radiology educator and scholar whose work spans digital neuroradiology education, diagnostic excellence, and trainee selection in radiology. He has coauthored more than 100 publications as well as chapters in several major textbooks, including Core Radiology: A Visual Approach to Diagnostic Imaging. He is an Editor of Radiopaedia.org and was Co-Convener of the Radiopaedia Virtual Conference in 2024, which had more than 13,000 registrants globally. He served as the founding Deputy Editor of Radiology: In Training, helping build the first trainee editorial board among radiology journals and a model later adopted across RSNA journals. He has served as Deputy Editor for Images in Radiology and for the Radiology Podcast, Contributing Editor for Podcasts for the American Journal of Roentgenology (on Diagnostic Excellence and Error), Guest Editor for the Journal of the American College of Radiology (on medical student education), and now Podcast Editor for the American Journal of Neuroradiology as well as the Diagnosis Please Editor for Radiology.
Dr. Deng has served in educational leadership roles and received teaching awards for learners across the spectrum of undergraduate and graduate medical education, including Diagnostic Faculty Educator of the Year Award from the Radiology Residency in 2023. Nationally, he received the RSNA Rising Star Award in 2025 and was runner-up for AuntMinnie.com’s Most Effective Radiology Educator in 2024. He was a Visiting Scholar with the American Board of Medical Specialties and, as a student, served on the Board of Directors of the National Resident Matching Program.
