Background
Dr. Eric Etchill's clinical interests include heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, including left ventricular assist device implantation (LVAD) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). He practices the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery, with expertise in coronary artery disease, structural and valvular heart disease, thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections, atrial fibrillation, and re-operative surgery.
Dr. Etchill's research interests include studying and improving outcomes and recovery of heart and lung transplant recipients, as well as patients who receive ECMO and/or temporary or permanent LVAD’s. Additional interests include improving donor preservation strategies, expanding the donor and recipient pools, understanding the relationship between cardiac surgery, mechanical circulatory support and coagulopathy, decreasing kidney injury associated with cardiac surgery, and improving neuroprotective strategies for patients undergoing cardiac surgery or mechanical support. He is also actively involved in surgical education and mentorship at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
